of Martha’s Vineyard is an old-fashioned, apothecary-style,
custom-blending perfume salon located on the beautiful island
of Martha’s Vineyard. Essense is the original, one & only perfume
salon by this name that has operated for more than 25 years--through
4 location changes and 3 owner/perfumers. After 30 years, Essense is entitled to a “mythology” of it’s own. Legend suggests that Essense began sometime in the 1970’s in Woodstock, NY. The current Essense still has some of the old apothecary bottles from that original perfume oil salon, which was called “Body Scents.” Legend also suggests that the original creator and perfumer of Body Scents moved the location to Martha’s Vineyard, where is was eventually renamed Essence Natural Perfumes by owner/perfumer #2. In 1992, the third and current owner bought the retail perfumery located in Edgartown. The third owner--a Midwesterner from Chicago, Indianapolis, and the Twin Cities--continued to operate the Edgartown retail location on the front porch of The Colonial Inn until December 2000. At that time the retail store was closed so the owner could return to Chicago and spend more time raising her child. A manager was hired to maintain the mail order dimension of the business (as well as possible) while the owner lived in Chicago. The present “Essense of Martha’s Vineyard” has recently rebuilt, by owner # 3, in a secluded Oak Bluffs location. This caribbean style “shack in the woods” has a green tin roof, bamboo floors, and the original mahogany bar/back bar from the old Essense in Edgartown. The selection of perfumes oils has been expanded to include over 500 perfume oils, essential oils, and fragrance oils. The possibilities for unique custom blended perfume oils are literally infinite. The 22,000 custom blends from over 25 years of customers are kept in a vault. Recipes range from back into the 1970’s. The present Essense of Martha’s Vineyard is a unique island experience, and the current owner is committed to keeping this unique experience available to Vineyarders and visitors a like, but strictly by APPOINTMENT ONLY basis. This means customers should expect to give minimum 24 hours notice. This is not a retail location. Mail order and web order service are available year round. Essense of Martha’s Vineyard is a Vineyard tradition for many people, and a Vineyard tradition it will stay. Essense of Martha’s Vineyard has absolutely NO affiliation with any other stores, imitators, chain-stores, or conglomerates by this same, or any other similar name. There is only ONE Essense, and it has been here on the Vineyard for more than a quarter century. |

Purple Hayes ™ Purple Hayes is an original Essense trademarked fragrance oil created in honor of friend and hair designer extraordinaire, Kelly Hayes of Minneapolis. Purple Hayes is a 1970's inspired fragrance reminiscent of Hendrix music and incense. A deep Oriental scent with base notes of: patchouli, ambergris and frankincense--this fragrance is punctuated with all smells of purple: lavenders, violets, and jasmines. An extremely sexy scent for both men and women--it incorporates edible base, middle and top notes of vanilla, citrus, and and spices, the accents of the "gourmand" fragrance trend so popular today. This unisex fragrance is fabulous when worn alone on wrists and neck, or carried in a moisturizing body lotion. Men can further "deepen" this scent, make it more masculine by mixing additional base notes with Purple Hayes. Good base notes to add might include: ambergris, musk, or sandalwood. Another Essense house blend, "Earth" is a great partner for Purple Hayes. Earth includes: Patchouli, Oak moss, and Vetiver. For all those "foxy ladies" out there--you might try mixing Purple Hayes with additional vanilla, jasmine, light floral musk, or more purple flowers!
